As was previously mentioned, the Wrangler 4xe uses a PHEV powertrain. Under the hood is a 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine. Mounted to the front of the engine, in place of the normal alternator, is an electric motor to provide impressive fuel efficiency and a seamless Engine Stop-Start function. Another electric motor is placed inside the transmission, replacing the torque converter to provide instantaneous torque. The electric motors are powered by a 400-volt lithium-ion battery pack recharged by an external power supply. Power is sent to the wheels by an 8-speed automatic transmission. This setup gives Wrangler 4xe drivers 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. Furthermore, the PHEV system allows the Wrangler 4xe a combined driving range of 370 miles, the gas equivalent of 49 MPG, and 21 miles of all-electric driving.

Just like the gas-powered Wrangler, the Wrangler 4xe comes standard with 4x4. Standard equipment for most Wrangler 4xe trim levels is Selec-Trac 4x4. This intelligent system constantly reads road conditions and sends torque to the axle with the most traction to maintain a grip on any terrain. Additionally, with Selec-Trac, the Wrangler 4xe maximizes fuel efficiency by shifting into two-wheel drive on dry, smooth roads and will seamlessly shift into four-wheel drive and distribute torque when a loss of traction occurs. This happens automatically without any driver input. The Wrangler Rubicon 4xe, however, comes standard with Rock-Trac 4x4. When the Rock-Trac transfer case is in 4-Low instead of 4-High, it provides a gear ratio of 4:1. This means that for every four rotations of the transmission axle shaft, the wheels turn once, providing drivers with phenomenal torque at low speeds to crawl over rugged terrain easily. The Rubicon 4xe also features locking front and rear differentials, which locks both axles to move all four wheels at the same speed to carry momentum over rugged terrain.

The Wrangler 4xe may have the heart of a PHEV, but it still has the soul of the legendary Wrangler. This means that it still has the iconic removable top and doors, a fold-down windshield, a vertical seven-slot grille, and round headlights. All 4xe models come in the Wrangler's Unlimited body style, featuring four doors. The Wrangler Willys 4xe kicks off the lineup with 32-inch mud-terrain tires, LED lighting, rock rails, FOX shock absorbers, a 7-inch infotainment touchscreen, and a locking differential. The Willys trim can be picked out of the lineup by its military-style 'Willys' decal on each side of the hood. Stepping up to the Sahara trim gets you an 8.4-inch touchscreen, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, push-buttion ignition, navigation, remote proximity keyless entry, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, LED exterior lighting, and 20-inch alloy wheels. As we mentioned above, the Wrangler Rubicon 4xe is the most rugged Wrangler trim, featuring 33-inch all-terrain tires, Rock-Trac 4x4, high-clearance fender flares, electronic sway bar disconnect, hood vents, and FOX off-roading suspension. The High Altitude trim rounds out the Wrangler 4xe lineup with a full body-color exterior look, a body-color hard top, unique wheels, blindspot monitoring, rear parking sensors, side mirror-integrated turn signals, Nappa leather-trimmed upholstery, and more.
